Can John Laurinaitis beat John Cena at Over the Limit?

John Laurinaitis has been called “clown shoes” and “Johnny Toolbox” by WWE Champion CM Punk. But the fact is he wields major power in WWE as General Manager of both Raw and SmackDown, as well as the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations.

We now know there is much more to?Laurinaitis than meets the eye.

Before his in-ring career was referenced on Raw SuperShow, only a fraction of the WWE Universe knew that Laurinaitis competed briefly in WCW and All Japan Pro Wrestling as ?Johnny Ace.? Johnny Ace’s career peaked when he competed in brutally hard-hitting matches in Japan from 1990 – 2000, winning six Tag Team Titles. However, he also competed briefly in the United States, most notably as one half of the tag team “The Dynamic Dudes” with Shane Douglas. Clad in neon tights and riding a skateboard, Johnny Ace wasn’t nearly as intimidating as he would become once he honed his craft in Japan. However, The Dynamic Dudes stood toe-to-toe with some of the top tag teams in WCW, including The Fabulous Freebirds, Doom and The Midnight Express.? (WATCH HIGHLIGHTS)

On the April 30 edition of Raw SuperShow, the WWE Universe saw a glimpse of what?Laurinaitis is capable of in the ring during a brutal 3-on-1 attack on John Cena. (WATCH | PHOTOS)?

Bolstering his powerbase, the GM has now surrounded himself with Superstars willing to do his biding, including David Otunga, Eve, Lord Tensai and Mr. Sakamoto.

With his in-ring abilities, his level of influence and the fact every muscle in John Cena’s left arm was injured at Extreme Rules by Brock Lesnar, is it possible that Laurinaitis could actually defeat Cena at WWE Over the Limit? (MATCH PREVIEW)

Sound off now below, and at WWE InterAction, with your thoughts on Johnny’s odds at beating Cena.

Putin pledges unity while police round up protesters

MOSCOW (Reuters) – Vladimir Putin took the oath as Russia’s president on Monday with a ringing appeal for unity at the start of a six-year term in which he faces growing dissent, economic problems and bitter political rivalries.

Parliament is expected to approve to his ally Dmitry Medvedev, 46, as prime minister on Tuesday, completing a job swap that has left many Russians feeling disenfranchised two decades after the Soviet Union collapsed.

Outside the Kremlin’s high red walls, riot police prevented protests by rounding up about 300 people, including men and women in cafes who were wearing the white ribbons symbolizing opposition to Putin, a day after detaining more than 400 during clashes.

But in the Kremlin, 2,000 dignitaries applauded Putin’s every step down the red carpet into a vast hall with gilded columns, the throne room of tsars, where he was sworn in with his right hand resting on the red-bound Russian constitution.

“We will achieve our goals if we are a single, united people, if we hold our fatherland dear, strengthen Russian democracy, constitutional rights and freedoms,” Putin said in a five-minute speech after taking the oath for the third time.

“I will do all I can to justify the faith of millions of our citizens. I consider it to be the meaning of my whole life and my obligation to serve my fatherland and our people.”

The Kremlin’s bells pealed, and the national anthem blared at the end of a ceremony which was followed by the head of the Russian Orthodox Church blessing Putin and the president taking charge of the nuclear suitcase.

Although he has remained Russia’s dominant leader for the past four years as prime minister, Putin, 59, has now taken back the formal reins of power he ceded to Medvedev in 2008 after eight years as president.

AUTHORITY WEAKENED

Putin is returning with his authority weakened by months of protests that have polarized Russia and left the former KGB spy facing a battle to reassert himself or risk being sidelined by the business and political elites whose backing is vital.

“We want to, and we will, live in a democratic country,” Putin declared, evoking patriotic images of Russia as a great nation and urging people to show a sense of responsibility and national pride to make the country stronger.

Putin made no mention of the protest movement in his speech and no promises of political reform in a series of decrees he signed after the ceremony, most of them focused on economic goals and efforts to improve living standards.

Despite his pledge, riot police, nervous after battling protesters at an anti-Putin rally on Sunday, cracked down on the slightest sign of dissent on the streets of central Moscow, many of which were almost empty.

At least 22 protesters were led away when a crowd of more than 100 started shouting “Russia without Putin” near two luxury hotels 500 m (yards) from the Kremlin.

“This shows that Putin is scared of dissatisfied citizens. Although there are not so many of us, there are not so few either,” said 18-year-old student Pavel Kopilkov.

Dozens of others were detained by police on a boulevard near the route of Putin’s motorcade to the ceremony, including some who had been sitting outside a French bistro wearing the white ribbon of protest on their jackets and coats.

A Reuters correspondent saw tables and chairs being overturned as the people were hauled away.

“This is shameful. This is not how you celebrate a holiday – this is how you celebrate seizing power,” liberal opposition leader Boris Nemtsov said shortly before he was detained.

Police moved in quickly several times through the day as activists sought to gather in various locations for protests, pressing against crowds and detaining people.

Moscow police said 300 had been detained, but that the number included some people who were released and then detained when attempting to protest again.

In Putin’s hometown of St Petersburg, police detained a few protesters in a crowd of dozens on the central Palace Square.

PUTIN UNDER PRESSURE

Although the protests, sparked by allegations of electoral fraud, had lost momentum before Sunday’s rally, they have given birth to a civil society that will press on with attempts to undermine Putin’s authority by contesting local elections.

Many of the protesters are angry that Putin is extending his 12-year domination of Russia and fear he will stifle political and economic reform in his third term as president.

He is under pressure to show he can adapt to the new political landscape. Few think he has changed much, if at all.

He has eased up on the choreographed macho antics that long burnished his image in Russia, such as riding horseback barechested and shooting a tiger with a tranquilizer gun.

Harder to shake off will be his habit of seeking total control, as political rivals begin to gain status and a rising middle class demands more political freedom.

He has to quell rivalries between liberals and conservatives battling for positions in the new cabinet under Medvedev, who is swapping jobs with Putin. The outcome of the struggle could help determine how far reforms go to improve the investment climate.

The $1.9 trillion economy is in better shape than that of most European countries, but is vulnerable to any drop in the price of oil, the main export commodity. The budget is under pressure from Putin’s lavish pre-election spending promises.

Putin has said he wants to attract more foreign investment by improving the business climate, reduce corruption and red tape, and end Russia’s heavy dependence on energy exports.

He called for the creation of a “new economy” in the speech and reiterated those goals in economic decrees signed on Monday, but critics say he has had plenty of time to tackle the persistent problems in his years in power.

He set out aims on a range of issues in other decrees, from higher wages for teachers and other state workers to better weapons for the military and a decrease in Russia’s death rate.

As in the past, he is likely to use tough anti-Western rhetoric on foreign policy to drum up support if times get tough in Russia. But he never yielded his strong influence over foreign policy as premier, so a major policy shift is unlikely.

Putin struck familiar chords in a decree on foreign policy, emphasizing opposition to interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states and saying Moscow wants “strategic” ties with the United States but will not tolerate meddling.

Obama campaign releases ad emphasizing economy

(AP) ? President Barack Obama’s re-election team, seeking to infuse a bit of positivity into the biting general election campaign, released a new television advertisement Monday portraying an America on the rise and urging voters to stick with the president.

In a shift from many of the campaign’s earlier ads, this latest commercial focuses entirely on promoting Obama’s record and makes no direct attacks on his presumptive Republican presidential rival, Mitt Romney.

The approach underscores the campaign’s recognition that the president can’t win a second term simply by attacking his opponent. Obama also needs to make the case that, despite continued economic unease, he has made things better for the American people and is the right steward for the economy going forward.

The commercial credits Obama with pulling the nation’s economy back from the brink of recession and saving the U.S. automobile industry. It also highlights what the campaign sees as the president’s foreign policy accomplishments, including killing Osama bin Laden and ending the war in Iraq.

In the ad, a narrator says of the U.S. economy, “We’re not there yet, it’s still too hard for too many. But we’re coming back.”

The Romney campaign responded swiftly, with spokeswoman Amanda Hennenberg said “Americans know they’re not better off than they were four years ago.” She ticked through areas of the economy where the Romney campaign says Obama has failed, including high gas prices and home foreclosures.

Fresh economic data out last week underscores the economic challenges Obama will have to overcome if he hopes to hold the White House. The economy added just 115,000 jobs in April. While the unemployment rate ticked down to 8.1 percent, the decline was largely because more people stopped looking for work. People who are no longer looking for jobs are not counted as unemployed.

The new commercial follows Obama’s back-to-back campaign rallies last weekend in Virginia and Ohio, where the president targeted Romney by name as a protector of the rich who will rubberstamp the agenda of GOP extremists in Congress. While Obama’s team dubbed the rallies as the official launch of the president’s campaign, Obama has been in re-election mode for months, headlining campaign fundraisers and holding official White House events in battleground states.

The Obama campaign said the new ad will air in nine politically important states: Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire, Iowa, North Carolina, Florida and Colorado.

The ladies of the ’80s

The WWE ladies of the 80s

Through the years, WWE has had its share of talented and amazing individuals that have performed and entertained the masses that comprise the WWE Universe. And a select part of that group are those from the female side of things. Recently, within the hallowed halls of WWE.com, there were a few water cooler discussions as to which decade had the best overall crop of female competitors. Well, in this article, I am going to zero in on the decade that launched WWE into a major force in sports and entertainment, the decade that produced ?the ladies of the ?80s.? (PHOTOS)

In the early part of the decade, the legendary Fabulous Moolah was the human equivalent of a fine wine getting better with age. The then-Women?s Champion dominated her craft over such opponents as Princess Victoria, Peggy Lee and Velvet McIntyre. However, the winds of change were starting to blow as 1984 began, as arguably the most impactful WWE women?s moment of the decade was to unfold, thanks to a young Texas girl by the name of Wendi Richter.

In contrast to the crafty and deliberate ways that Moolah operated, Richter was full of vim and vigor. Richter represented a girl who just wanted to have fun, and through her association with singer Cyndi Lauper, they did just that. Fast forward to July 23, 1984. WWE and MTV presented The Brawl To End It All, and Wendi Richter became Women?s Champion be defeating The Fabulous Moolah who, despite having Capt. Lou Albano by her side, was dethroned. (WATCH)

The Richter-Lauper association was a very good one, as it was one of the signature pieces of what became the “Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Connection.” Lauper’s tenure with WWE was a feather in the company?s cap. The pop star recruited Albano to be part of her ?Girl?s Just Want To Have Fun? music video, and things gravitated from there. There was a bump in the road on Feb. 18, 1985 when Moolah’s charge Leilani Kai won the Women?s Championship from Richter on MTV?s War To Settle The Score. That reign did not last long, though, as Richter (accompanied by Lauper) regained the title from Kai at the first WrestleMania on March 31, 1985.

Another lady who hit a grand slam in her first WWE at bat was Sherri Martel. Having honed her craft in various wrestling organizations in the early-to-mid-80s, Martel entered WWE on July 24, 1987. Untouted, she went right into the frying pan and came out as the new Women?s Champion, defeating The Fabulous Moolah (who had regained the title from Richter under the disguise as Spider Lady). As many thought that her win over Moolah was somewhat sensational in scope, Martel took that adjective to heart and renamed herself Sensational Sherri. Her in-ring style was aggressive yet cunning, and she was always ahead of the curve as it related to her title defenses.

Of course many WWE fans probably remember Sherri more for her managerial exploits that picked up steam in the early 1990?s. And her foray into managing might have been in part to her dethroning at the hands of Rockin’ Robin on Oct. 7, 1988.

Health Canada Grants Apricus Biosciences Pre … – Health and Fitness

SAN DIEGO, May 7, 2012 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) ?
Apricus Biosciences, Inc. (?Apricus Bio? or the ?Company?)

/quotes/zigman/121090/quotes/nls/apri APRI
+0.78%

(
http://www.apricusbio.com ) announced today that Health Canada has granted the Company?s request for a Pre-New Drug Submission (?Pre-NDS?) meeting to obtain regulatory guidance from the agency for Femprox(R), its topical alprostadil cream for the treatment of female sexual arousal disorder (?FSAD?). The meeting is scheduled to take place on July 17, 2012. Apricus Bio expects to obtain feedback from Health Canada regarding the suitability of their existing clinical, preclinical, and chemistry data to support a New Drug Submission (?NDS?) in Canada.

Femprox(R) is a topically applied formulation of 0.4% alprostadil delivered using dodecyl 2-(N, N dimethylamino)-propionate hydrochloride (DDAIP HCl) or NexACT(R), Apricus Bio?s proprietary drug delivery technology. To the Company?s current belief, Femprox(R) is further along in development than any other product for FSAD and is the only product candidate to have successfully completed an approximately 400 subject Phase III clinical trial, a trial which achieved statistical significance in both its primary and secondary endpoints.

?We look forward to working with Health Canada and gaining clarity regarding the development path forward for Femprox(R) in Canada,? said Bassam Damaj, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Apricus Bio. ?We believe Femprox(R) is a unique treatment option for FSAD, not only because of its topical delivery, local mechanism of action, and its safety profile, but also because of its high response rate. Upon completion of this meeting we will be one step closer to filing in the Canadian market and bringing a new treatment option to women suffering from FSAD.?

About Femprox(R)

Femprox(R) is a 0.4% alprostadil cream intended for the treatment of FSAD. To date, Apricus Bio has completed nine clinical studies with Femprox(R), including one, 98-patient Phase II study in the U.S. and an approximately 400 subject Phase III study in China. To the Company?s knowledge, no product is currently approved to treat FSAD, a persistent or recurring inability to attain, or maintain adequate sexual excitement, causing personal distress. Estimates of the FSAD market size put it on par with erectile dysfunction in males, and possibly larger.

Femprox(R) exerts a relaxant effect on vulvar and clitoral blood vessels in women, leading to increased blood flow. This leads to pelvic engorgement and enhanced secretion activity of the vulvar epithelium. The resultant increase in lubrication and sensory feedback due to pelvic engorgement is believed to produce a clinically significant increase in sexual arousal in women with FSAD. Femprox(R) enables a rapid permeation of blood deep into the target tissues thus enabling a new pharmacotherapy for the treatment of FSAD through increasing the blood flow to tissue.
